In the ever-evolving tapestry of Hong Kong’s nightlife, where tradition meets tomorrow, Artifact Bar emerges as an unforgettable pilgrimage for design devotees, hospitality lovers, and discerning drinkers alike. Tucked beneath the vibrant food-hall energy of BaseHall in Central, this speakeasy defies expectations, transforming a subterranean space into a luminous stage for intimate conversation, crafted cocktails, and sensory intrigue.
Conceived by NC Design + Architecture (NCDA) and lit to poetic effect by LightOrigin Studio, Artifact Bar unfolds as a narrative journey from the moment you step through its secret entryway. Guests are greeted by circular apertures - industrial pipe-like portholes that hint at the adventure ahead, while dim, subdued lighting in the corridor evokes a clandestine industrial landscape, a prologue to the story that unfolds within.

A monolithic stone portal marks the entry, setting a tone of subterranean discovery
Once inside, the subterranean constraint becomes Artifact’s defining strength. With no natural light and limited ceiling height, the bar uses materiality and atmosphere to transport visitors. Mirrored ceilings and sculptural, rib-like fibreglass arches echo the rhythmic vaults of underground cisterns, expanding the sense of space beyond its physical boundaries. A soft, artificial “sunset” disc - a glowing circular skylight above the walnut bar - bathes the lounge in warm radiance, creating a paradoxical juxtaposition of light and shadow that feels deeply cinematic.

The curved bar counter acts as the room's glowing anchor, encouraging social connection
This isn’t merely a design gesture, it’s a hospitality philosophy in motion. The lighting choreography guides patrons from entry to conversation, crafting intimacy without sacrificing drama. Booths bathed in gentle downward glow cultivate private tête-à-têtes, while linear fixtures under seating create a runway effect that subtly energizes the space. Each vignette of light and form invites guests to pause, sip, and absorb.

At the heart of Artifact’s ethos is a cocktail program as thoughtful as its architecture. Overseen by industry luminaries including Beckaly Franks and Ezra Star, the menu celebrates aged and premium spirits, with inventive serves like The Grape One and the brine-infused Artifact Gibson anchoring a curated lineup that evolves with the seasons. Whether you’re indulging in a rare single malt or exploring a bespoke aperitivo, each drink feels harmoniously paired with its surroundings - the warm glow, the sculptural curves, and the evocative play of light and shadow.

For hospitality purists, Artifact Bar doesn’t just serve cocktails, it crafts experiences. The attentive service, the tactile materials, and the immersive journey from entrance to last call all speak to a deep understanding of how design can elevate connection. It’s no surprise that the bar’s lighting design clinched Architectural Lighting Design of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2024, a mark of global recognition for its atmospheric ingenuity.

In a city where every corner tells a story, Artifact Bar stands out as a chapter worth savoring - an underworld haven that feels equal parts sanctuary and spectacle, where hospitality is an art and every sip feels like discovery.
