Nestled at the crossroads of the Duku Highway and the Ili “Figure-8” Scenic Loop, Hotel Indigo Nalati unfolds as a serene retreat in the sweeping steppe of Xinjiang, China - where sky and grass meet the distant silhouette of the Tianshan Mountains. More than a place to stay, this immersive hospitality experience draws deeply from local culture and landscape, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect, and savor the rhythms of the seasons.
At the core of the design narrative, conceived by CCD/Cheng Chung Design, is mausym - the Kazakh word for “season.” This concept becomes both metaphor and organizing principle, guiding how light, material, and space shift throughout the day and year, and anchoring every element of the hotel in the cultural cadence of Nalati.

Dispersed brick volumes form a village-like settlement, echoing nomadic encampments embedded gently within Nalati’s grassland landscape
Rather than presenting a singular monolithic structure, Hotel Indigo Nalati is composed of dispersed volumes that gently scatter across the landscape, connected by winding paths that weave through forested clearings. From afar, the cluster of buildings reads like a calm settlement, echoing the nomadic logic of the grasslands and fostering a grounded sense of place that feels both intimate and expansive.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed beneath a sweeping curved canopy inspired by the first light of sunrise - an architectural gesture that softly transitions from open landscape to sheltered retreat. Materials such as brick, stone, and warm timber reflect the palette of the steppe, reinforcing a tactile connection to the earth and climate.

Gathering Spaces that Celebrate Hospitality
The hotel lobby sits beneath a domed structure that references the traditional yurt, creating a central hub where design and hospitality converge. Earth-toned surfaces and rhythmic columns frame generous views toward the grasslands and mountains beyond, while a contemporary fireplace becomes both a physical and symbolic heart of the space, encouraging relaxed gatherings, quiet reflection, or shared stories by the fire.

Within the all-day dining venue, named SHOW · A Neighborhood Café, circular planning and flowing circulation paths evoke the welcoming rituals of Kazakh hospitality. A central bar - reminiscent of a solitary tree on the steppe - becomes a focal point for social connection, blurring the line between communal dining experiences and the surrounding landscape.

Guestrooms as Quiet Retreats
Guest rooms continue the retreat experience, with design gestures that subtly reinterpret yurt forms. Skylights echo traditional roof openings, allowing natural light and starlit skies to shape the atmosphere, while materials and textiles draw inspiration from regional craft traditions. Felt-inspired carpets, carved wood details, and lattice-like partitions bring warmth, tactility, and quiet cultural resonance to every corner of the space.

Here, hospitality becomes an invitation to slow down, to observe the subtle dance of light across grassland horizons, and to carry away a deeper appreciation for the rhythms of place. Hotel Indigo Nalati doesn’t just offer a stay, it offers a sense of belonging to the land and its stories, crafting a sanctuary where every moment feels connected, grounded, and deeply restorative.
